Baldrockistan (Australia)
Welcome to Baldrockistan.
The State of Sabotage.
A strategy of strangers,
solidarity over sovereignty,
and a subversion of surveillance.
Yet the State of Sabotage is not a purely virtual community, it encompasses real state territory. In September 2003, SoS first hoisted its flag over its own territory on the fifth continent.
The Location
Geographical coordinates:

Baldrockistan is situated in Australia, a 2 1/2 hour drive form the coast of Baron Bay or Surfer’s Paradise.
The territory lies between Tenterfield and Stanthrope, 3km from Bald Rock National Park on the New South Wales-Queensland border. The National Park is a World Heritage Site and one of the healthiest places in Australia. The town of Tenterfield is considered to be the Australian “birthplace of a nation”.
The ‘Rock’ is Australia’s largest granite monolith with a height of 1277 meters above sea level. It rises about 200 meters above the surrounding bushland, and is 750 meters long and 500 meters wide.
Geology and Landform
Baldrockistan is 950 m above sea level. The plot encompasses a small part of the New England Tableland´s granite belt. This belt covers 2,500 square km extending from Tamworth to southern Queensland. It was created by a large extrusion of molten rock which penetrated upwards through the older sedimentary and volcanic rocks more than 225 million years ago as part of New England Batholith.
This complex geological history has created spectacular granite domes, towers and balancing rocks, giving the area what is termed an “inselberg landscape”.
Baldrockistan encompasses a total area of 650 hectares. The area is full of canyons, stone arches, echo points and plenty of kangaroos. A natural site of land designed to protect the ecological integrity of ecosystems for present and future generations provides a foundation for spiritual, educational, recreational and visitor opportunities.
Native Animals
No systematic fauna survey has been undertaken in the planning area. However 27 mammals, 73 birds, 22 reptiles and seven amphibians were recorded during the North-East Forest Biodiversity Study (1994). Native animals occurring in Baldrockistan, listed as Vulnerable under TSC act, include the glossy black-cockatoo, yellow bellied glider, brush-tailed rock wallaby, tiger quoll, greater broad-nosed bat, koala and the border thick-tailed gecko. Several species at the limit of their geographical range have also been recorded in the area. These include the common wombat, the satin bower bird and the superb lyrebird.
5km north of Baldrockistan is Boonoo Boonoo Park. The Boonoo Boonoo River is one of the park’s most spectacular features, winding its way down through high granite country, strewn with boulders and covered with open forest. A majestic dark pool offers the final attraction before the river slides over the falls. The viewing platform allows a breathtaking view of the falls as they roar into the gorge 210 meters below. A gully of rainforest bathes in the moisture at the base of the falls.
History – Indigenous Cultural Heritage
Although there is no documented chronology of Aboriginal population in the Region, it is known that the area was significant to the “Jukambal” people who inhabited the region. “Jukambal” means “big rock” in Aboriginal language.
Bald Rock was an important meeting place for the three Aboriginal nations in the area: the Jukambal, Bundgalung and Kamilleroi. Bald Rock was a neutral place as it formed a boundary marker between nations. This enabled the nations to meet without having to pass through each other´s territory.
