On August 30, 2003 at 1:00 pm Finnish time, on the island of Harakka
just off of Helsinki, SoS (the State of Sabotage) was called into existence
before a large audience. ROBERT JELINEK and HR. GIGER, together with
“HUUTAJAT,” the Finnish 25-man screaming men’s choir,
ceremonially inaugurated the state. Also on this occasion, the “SABOTAGE”
sculptural monument, designed by the Swiss artist, “Alien”
inventor, and one of the most important representatives of fantastic
realism, was unveiled.

The SoS state is bound to this understanding of "state art"
and strives for the development and promotion of its own SoS Art Foundation.
In cooperation with various artists, artistic practices, models, visions
and utopias, as well as trans-national characteristics, will become
visible and new conditions of the reality of state and art will be exemplified.
For the first time, the current SoS Art Collection will be published
in the form of sets of 72 SoS postage stamps. The stamp edition should
not only reflect the state passion for collecting, but continue it in
the form of philately. Limited edition of 500 copies.

SoS BRICK
Idea & design: Robert Jelinek for Sabotage Communications
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, an unprecedented construction
boom was taking place in Vienna. Almost 70% of the buildings constructed
at this time were built with bricks inscribed with the imperial double
eagle and the initials “A.M.” of the Viennese manufacturer Alois Miesbach.
Utilizing technical innovations and unscrupulously exploiting his laborers,
patriarch Miesbach became one of the most successful entrepreneurs of
the turn of the century. Most of the brick workers came from Bohemia
and were also known as Ziegelböhm (Brick Bohemians). The Ziegelböhm
lived like serfs at the giant Wienerberg brickworks. In this way, the
illegal truck or tin system could be re-introduced (“truck” means exchange
or barter). Laborers were not paid in currency, but received tin tokens
redeemable only at specific cafeterias. Not until the Viennese physician
to the poor, later labor leader and co-founder of the First Republic
Victor Adler reported on the inhumane conditions did an organized resistance
movement of Ziegelböhm form.

of established systems is performed as an abolishment of state-regulated
land ownership and demarcation. The SoS manhole cover is a state border
shift, a new state demarcation and an artistic sculpture - a transnational
entrance on national territory.
